Pierce County Fire Sprinkler Service
Installation, confidence testing, and repair for Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, and the rest of the county from our Gig Harbor shop.
Emerald Fire installs, inspects, and repairs fire sprinkler systems across Pierce County from our shop in Gig Harbor. We’ve been doing it since 1989, and the jobs range from the Chambers Bay project in University Place to aircraft hangars and operations facilities at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to the Candlewood Suites outside the base. Designs come from our NICET III and IV staff, pipe comes out of our own fabrication shop, and our licensed fitters install it. No subcontractors.
The thing about Pierce County is that it is not one jurisdiction. Tacoma has its own fire prevention bureau. Lakewood and University Place answer to West Pierce Fire and Rescue. Puyallup, Spanaway, and Parkland are Central Pierce. The east side is East Pierce. The unincorporated county has its own bureau and its own permit form. Getting the package to the right counter the first time is half of keeping a project on schedule, and it is the part we do every week.
Coming from Gig Harbor, the Narrows Bridge toll only runs eastbound, which is a small thing, but it means a service call into Tacoma costs us one toll and the trip home is free. Most of the county is within about forty minutes of the shop.

Fire authorities by city
Tacoma
Tacoma Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau
Permits and plan review through Tacoma Fire Prevention at 3471 South 35th Street (253-591-5740), with fees paid through the city’s Accela portal. Tacoma requires a cover inspection before drywall goes up and expects the system pretested before the inspector arrives. Tacoma work runs from downtown and the medical district out to the Port and Tideflats warehouses, where high-piled storage drives the design.
Lakewood and University Place
West Pierce Fire and Rescue
West Pierce (3631 Drexler Drive West, University Place, 253-564-1623) does fire permitting, plan review, and inspections for Lakewood, and it requires confidence tests through The Compliance Engine. In University Place the city’s Planning and Development Services (253-566-5656) issues the fire permits with West Pierce as the fire authority. Chambers Bay is ours.
Puyallup
City of Puyallup with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue
The city’s Development and Permitting Services (333 South Meridian, 253-864-4165) issues the sprinkler permit through its online portal. Central Pierce Fire and Rescue (253-538-6400) is the fire authority. Puyallup wants the hydrostatic test witnessed in two visits two hours apart, so plan the schedule around that.
Spanaway, Parkland, Midway
Central Pierce Fire and Rescue
Central Pierce covers the unincorporated area south of Tacoma. Building permits come from Pierce County, and the sprinkler permit is a separate county Fire Permit through the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Sumner, Bonney Lake, Milton, Edgewood
East Pierce Fire and Rescue
East Pierce (253-863-1800) is the fire authority for the east side of the county. Each city issues its own building permit; the fire review goes to the district.
Fife, DuPont, Steilacoom, Orting
Various
Fife contracts with Tacoma Fire for fire service. DuPont has its own fire department, Steilacoom’s is the Department of Public Safety, and Orting Valley Fire and Rescue covers Orting. Tell us the city and we’ll address the package to the right one.
Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One
Our home office. City permits inside the limits, county Fire Permit outside. Details on the Gig Harbor page.
Who reviews your sprinkler permit
There is no single Pierce County fire marshal for everything. Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, and Puyallup each run their own permit counter, and the unincorporated county has another. The fire authority can be a city fire department or a fire district that contracts with the city. The list above is who you’re dealing with in each place.
For unincorporated parcels, the sprinkler permit is a Pierce County Fire Permit filed with the county’s Fire Prevention Bureau at 2401 South 35th Street in Tacoma (253-798-7179), separate from the building permit. The application wants stamped drawings, hydraulic calculations, cut sheets, the contractor’s state license number, and a certificate of water availability for any underground main. We prepare that package as part of the job.
All of it is reviewed under the 2021 International Fire and Building Codes with Washington amendments, in effect statewide since March 15, 2024. The 2024 editions are scheduled to take effect May 3, 2027.

In Washington the annual sprinkler inspection is called a confidence test, and most Pierce County fire authorities now want the report filed electronically. The county’s Fire Prevention Bureau has required The Compliance Engine since May 2023 and no longer accepts reports by email. West Pierce requires it for Lakewood. Tacoma tracks confidence tests through its own prevention bureau. We file wherever your building requires and send you a copy, so you are not the one chasing a report in March.
The test follows NFPA 25: quarterly and annual inspection and testing, the five-year internal pipe inspection, and fire pump or backflow tests on buildings that have them. A failed item on a confidence test usually comes with a deadline from the fire authority. Send us the report and we’ll schedule the repair and the retest.
If a system goes down, call 253-857-2056. Most of the county is within forty minutes of our shop, and a Tacoma or University Place call is usually under twenty. We’ll get the repair moving along with the notifications the impairment requires.
What to send for a Pierce County quote
New system: the address and the city it is actually in, what the building is for, square footage and stories, drawings if you have them, and your permit timeline. If there is high-piled storage, a fire pump, or anything hazardous, say so up front; it changes the design and the fire authority will ask anyway. Existing system: the address, the type of system, roughly how old it is, and any notice from the fire authority or your insurer.
Confidence tests across the county book best with two or three weeks of notice so we can route them sensibly. Emergencies go straight to the phone.

Pierce County questions
Who is the contact for Pierce County fire sprinkler work?
The Gig Harbor office: 11505 Burnham Dr, STE 201, Gig Harbor, WA 98332, 253-857-2056, Info@emeraldfirellc.com. One office and one number cover the whole county.
Do you only serve Gig Harbor inside Pierce County?
No. Gig Harbor is where the shop is. We install and inspect across the county: Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Fife, Sumner, Bonney Lake, Spanaway, Parkland, DuPont, Steilacoom, Orting, and the unincorporated areas in between. Tell us the city so the permit goes to the right fire authority.
Which fire authority reviews my permit?
It depends on the city. Tacoma Fire Prevention for Tacoma and Fife; West Pierce Fire and Rescue for Lakewood and University Place; Central Pierce for Puyallup, Spanaway, and Parkland; East Pierce for Sumner, Bonney Lake, Milton, and Edgewood; the county Fire Prevention Bureau for unincorporated parcels. We address the package to the right one.
Do my confidence test reports have to go through The Compliance Engine?
For unincorporated Pierce County and for Lakewood, yes. Tacoma and the other cities have their own reporting. We file the report wherever your building requires it as part of the inspection.
Can you handle a fire inspection notice?
Yes. If the fire authority wrote up a sprinkler deficiency, an impairment, or a missed confidence test, send the notice and the address. We schedule the repair and the retest and give you the report to close it out.
Are you licensed in Washington?
Yes. Our Washington contractor registration is EMERAFL980MR, and we hold the State Fire Marshal’s fire protection sprinkler contractor license. We have worked from Gig Harbor since 1989.
